Have you reflected on your cybersecurity objectives for 2022?

New year, new resolutions! When it comes to securing your business data, assets, and people have you reflected on your objectives for 2022?

No one would dispute a data breach is a nightmare for any company and it’s one that more and more small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Australia are increasingly experiencing. Unlike their bigger counterparts, SMBs generally have less resources and must do more with less when it comes to achieving their security objectives. According to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), one in three breaches in Australia were linked to compromised login credentials. This means SMBs can make a big difference in protecting their assets if they manage their passwords properly. It’s also more important than ever today to protect your passwords as so many employees have been working from home since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic.

Let’s take a look at some of the best practice SMB password management and what SMBs need from a password management solution with that in mind.

The following tips I offer are simple and effective to transform insecure password habits into best practises. I hope you can build them into your new year resolution as part of your identity management policies for 2022 and beyond:

  • Use the password generator to ensure that each password is unique and strong;
  • Create a long and strong master password. To make it long and memorable, consider creating a “passphrase” like this: surfing@goldcoast22;
  • Don’t give your master password to anyone;
  • Do not use the master password as the password for another account; and
  • Enable multi-factor authentication for added security

All businesses are vulnerable to cyber-attacks. At Axient we recommend LastPass, it’s a simple to use, powerful password management solution. LastPass consolidates single-sign-on and multi-factor authentication capabilities to deliver increased productivity for your employees and improved security.

If you would like to find out how LastPass could be the right Password Manager for your business or if you have any questions unique to your organisation when it comes to password management, don’t hesitate to contact me, I’d be more than happy to answer them.
